Phase 1 - Rehabilitation

The project aims to recreate the existing channel by following natural channel design principles through excavation of existing substrate, establishing natural meanders and riffle pool sequences, and the addition of fish habitat features for approximately 100m between the railway tracks downstream to the confluence with the Current River.

As part of this project volunteers will be involved with reinstating a functional riparian vegetation zone by installing native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants that will increase shade and improve the productivity of the creek. Small juvenile brook trout need this type of habitat to survive warm summer months and avoid predators until they are large enough to return to the Current River.

Funding for this project has been secured from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund, The Great Lakes Sustainability Fund, Canada-Ontario Agreement Respecting the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem, the Land Stewardship and Habitat Restoration Fund, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunter Zone B chapter (Thunder Bay District), Hydro One, the Thunder Bay District Stewardship Council and North Shore Steelhead Association.
